Different take on an icon. Does the sky have any symbolic or metaphoric meaning for you? Could be open to a wide array of political interpretations. F&f
Dimitris Sivyllis replied:
Thank you Stephen for an excellent question! This image is one of those close to my heart, not for politics or patriotism (of either the acceptable or the unacceptable kind), but for the pursuit of Liberty and the optimism for a new day. I first decided that my “portrait” of the Lady would be of her walking away from the camera back in March 1986 when I first shot that angle. In April 2016 I shot the angle again (this one) in several compositional brackets (versions) some of which are the last images in the Impressions of New York collection here. The detail of interpretation is left to the mind of the viewer. But my general idea is that Liberty does not wait for you; you have to follow her, chase her and be worthy of catching up with her as she walks-on ahead no matter what you do. This time around, and for this particular frame from the shoot, I decided to use digital manipulation and played around with several different skies, “feels” and extra attention to the bare branches between us and her. In the sky that I did choose, I paid attention to how the color/hue of the lamp matches the lining on the clouds and how the lamp itself appears to be clearing-away the illusion to bring-in a real and blue sky. I did not want to make a political statement here, as strongly as I feel about politics these days, and I hope no political statement is being made. I would be surprised though if the overall image were to invite acceptance from any political group that I, myself, feel far removed from (in that I suppose I would not have created something that can easily be misappropriated). Thank you again! I loved answering this one :-) Take care, d.
